The Challenge Pilot Addresses

The manufacture and maintenance of naval defense shipyards and submarines involve high mix, low-volume production processes. Operators often work in narrow, confined environments exposed to harsh conditions such as high temperatures. These constraints cause stress and force welders into uncomfortable postures, leading to low productivity and quality issues. The TELEWELDER pilot aims to improve welder’s working conditions to Naval defense’s welders by developing a human-assistance system that ensures safer operations and supports adaptive manufacturing.

Objectives

The TELEWELDER solution aims to develop a safe and immersive remote welding system designed for highly constrained and hazardous environments such as ship hulls and naval structures. The concept allows operators to remain in a comfortable and secure location while remotely controlling a robotic arm that has been deployed and positioned within the working
area. The process involves transporting and securely attaching the robotic system inside the confined space, followed by any necessary pre-heating operations. From a remote station equipped with Extended Reality (XR) interfaces, welders can visualize the environment in real time through high-resolution stereo cameras, benefit from enhanced depth perception using point cloud
overlays, and perform welding tasks with the assistance of virtual guides and collision avoidance algorithms.

Key Technologies or Methods Being Developed or Tested

  • Control a remote robot with an immersive 3D simulation using a virtual reality headset.
  • Define and take virtual guides into account.
  • Define restricted areas by injecting the 3D model of the environment.
